About Rama

Chapter 14 - So, You Want To Be A Teacher?

The student meeting this particular evening was being held in the Beverly Theater in Beverly Hills.  Throughout the evening I felt an agitation in my heart increasing.  I had felt this stirring for over a week.  During the meditation I suddenly became aware of what it was that was burning inside me.

During the break I waited in the theater lobby.  Rama sometimes walked around and made himself available to us in this way.  After a while I spotted him and I quietly approached him and waited for an appropriate time to gain his attention.  I waited patiently until he finished talking to another student.  As he turned away, I said his name out loud.  His name is a mantra and I said it as such.

He turned and faced me.  I felt myself starting to dissolve.  I was determined to state my intention.

"Rama, I would like to be a teacher," I blurted out.

He said, "Of course you do."

I stood my ground.  I asked, "When?"

This question gained his attention.  I felt him look even deeper into me.

"There is much more to teaching than you realize.  In order to teach, a person needs to be able to look deeply into those he meets.  The teacher should be able to 'see' the aura of his students and to assess the damage and tears that the individual has on their subtle physical body.  He needs to have the ability to evaluate the emotional body; is it out of control or unstable?  How about the occult body?  Where in the body does it manifest most of its power?  How powerful is it?  A teacher needs to be able to look at the past-life development in order to see karmic influences and gain insight into the general direction the soul seems to be taking.  What about the causal body?  It's important to have the ability to evaluate the potential that the individual is capable of realizing in this life.

"It is only when a teacher can account for all of these different variables that a really effective series of techniques and recommendations can be made.  If a teacher starts to teach before this awareness develops, then he will just be dealing with the surface and that is not usually very effective and can even be counterproductive and destructive."

I stood there finally grasping all that was involved in my request.  I was overwhelmed and painfully aware at how little I could see or was even aware of.

Rama sensed this and smiled and said, "Just hang around.  I'm sure that as time goes by you will begin to see all these things.  In the meantime just keep up your meditation."

I felt a deep-seated appreciation for his abilities and insight.  I also had an increased awareness into how Rama was able to deal with people such as myself.

As I walked away, I still wanted to teach.  The desire was even greater now that I saw how exciting it would be once I could do all the things Rama said.  I had a long way to go.  I knew that I would need to wait until the right time and had developed these skills to be really effective.

I had no idea that my association with Rama would create such advanced states of awareness in an incredibly short period of time!
